Exercise for young children and autistic kids?

Question: Exercise for young children and autistic kids?

(Posted by: on 2011-01-26 20:41:45)

I'm going to be leading a gym session twice a week for kids between the ages of 4 and 7 and one of the girls has autism. I'm used to working with adults but not children. Any suggestions?

You need to find fun kids exercises that they'll enjoy each week. There are a ton of exercises which are really fun and keep their attention. The best part about it is that they don't even realize they're exercising. Keep a notebook handy and document which ones they like and which ones they don't like. Then you can have a master list of age appropriate activities which will make your job a lot easier. Good luck!

Yoga would be fun and something with basketballs or soccer balls would be great!

It depends where she is on the spectrum, my son has autism and its pretty mild, he has a gym class on saturdays, sometime he may dart off, he doesn't exhibit behaviors there, so you may have to work with whatever is best for her, they are all individuals, good luck.
