The Making of “The Swing”

April 12th, 2008 · No Comments

We received an email from a family whose son is also suffering from seizures, and when they saw the swing that Nathanael is using for his daily therapy and balancing, they asked for instructions on how to fix a swing for them.

So we quickly SMS Handy Bergson, and despite being out of the country he replied back with some of the quick set up required to put up the swing.

Required Stuff:

  • Fan Hook & 2 x Fan Ceiling Plug
  • Wooden Board - 2′ x 2′ (feet)
  • Rope Lenght is 5 - 6 Feet
  • 2 Metal Connectors
  • Metal Chain

The Making of the SWING

The SWING

Handy Bergson added a layer of Carpet on top of the Wood

to give some extra comfort! :)

Fan Hook

The Fan Hook is drilled into the ceiling

with the two special Fan Hook Plugs. Bergson even put his

entire weight on it  … and it HOLDS! :)

[Yes u need a rather heavy duty drill for this, wear goggles lah, cos the dust

from the ceiling keeps falling into your eyes]

 Metal Chain

We used a Metal Chain to connect from the Ceiling

to the Swing. We had two Chain Connectors (top & bottom)

The Board

U can see that Handy Bergson is a scout. :) Check out the Knots! :)

Four holes were drilled into the Wooden Board at the four edges.

The rope was cut into TWO long pieces

ONE Piece of the rope will secure two ends of Board.

So that was how Handy Bergson set up the Swing for Nathanael. One more thing to note, if you live in a landed property, we believe that you would have more options to place the swing.

We suggest the following

  • Swing should not be near a wall / hindrance to the flow of the swing
  • Ensure there’s sufficient space to swing left and right, up and down
  • Ensure that the swing’s chain is set so that u can turn the swing round and round
  • For safety please ensure that the swing board is not too high off the floor
  • Finally have something placed at the bottom of the swing for safety reasons

VERY VERY IMPORTANT

We would suggest that you get some advice from OT Specialist who knows about SENSORY INTEGRATION as there are specific exercises that are done with the swing. And it all depends on the need of the child in therapy.

Happy Swinging! :)
